When I was younger I was pretty keen to become a republic, but now days not so much, mainly because what will actually change? As it stands the GG is selected by the parliament, we elect the parliament, so all that changes in a practical sense is the GG becomes a President with the same powers as before, at the cost of hundred million dollars.
And frankly, with the calibre of Australian politicians at the moment, I'm glad none of them can aspire to call themselves President, they don't deserve it. I'd rather we just wait out until the Queen/King actually tries to make us do something stupid, and then just flip them the bird and go republic, doing it beforehand just seems like a symbolic but overall meaningless change that'll cost money we could be spending on more useful things.
