I've looked at the review and one of the main complaints is that when you use a speed-up item and crash, you respawn without an item, thus making you vulnerable to an offensive item of competing drivers. This criticism is perfectly sound, because no game should punish the player for mistakes that were committed by the player.

I laughed, but only because I read it in Greg Miller's voice.
