I think you just hit on why many people respect him, though I get the feeling you didn't mean it that way.

Colin Powell may have all the integrity in the world...but if he is no longer a Conservative then I will not vote for him, nor do I care who he endorses.  Sounds to me like he should switch parties, unless he stays a Republican on purpose just to get people to switch.  Pretty under-handed thing to do...
