Is Disney buying Lucasfilm really a good thing?

I think that your first paragraph here is dead on.  I don't understand why people automatically assume that a new trilogy will be an improvement over the last.  What is going to be the basis for the next three?  Lucas' film treatments I'm told.  If fans think that his last trilogy was bad , which actually dealt with a young Anakin Skywalker turning to the Dark Side, then how will the next trilogy improve with an over the hill group from the original trilogy or (even worse) a group that none of us know?

I'm not a big SW fan (actually, I'm not much of a fan at all). So I won't argue Disney will make better movies, though I do think the prequels are really bad and hard to "top" (in badness).

But anyway, from what I heard the third trilogy would deal with Luke's move to the dark side and the whole story repeating itself, closing a circle. That was Lucas's original intent at least I think.
