Lives in Mario were never a problem, as since since Mario 1 they were infinite (infinite continues)
Just compare Mario World with something like DKC 2 or 3. Mario World was the beggining of the Nintendo (japan developed) standard for difficult imo. The NES Marios, Zeldas, Metroids and Kid Icarus (and more) were almost cruel to kids. Nothing changed much since the SNES, imo - with exceptions, obvious, like Yoshi's Story DS that is more difficult than Ghouls and Goblins (it was not really developed by Nintendo too)
I think it's good they're putting some hardcore courses as dlc for Mario 3DS. You can see those look like those extra difficult mods you see on youtube. And this challenge mode in this game can prove to be er... a challenge.
