My best explaination is that Gran Turismo has went on for many years before solid competetion (Forza) sprang up, which has earned it a large dedicated fanbase. However, if you compare GT5's sales to that of the past entries in the series, one could make the case that Forza made quite a dent in GT5's sales, dedicated fanbase or not.
