human nature requires motivation to take interest in an action.

in video games, story is often times the motivator. you could be playing for points or k/d ration or whatever but most games use story.

I'd say its actually the opposite for most games. Or at least the most successful games. For me, motivation isn't k/d ratio, it's just having fun with the gameplay. When I play a game, I rarely think abot the plot behind it.

So what are these most successful games which don't have points/achievements/story?

Most Nintendo games go gameplay first over story/points. And even many of the most successful HD games are too.

So you prefer pointing vaguely to something which only you seem to know, instead of giving names to the games.

Pretty much any Nintendo game; Wii sports, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, 2D Mario, 3D Mario. And most HD games, especially online games; Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Battlefield, Skyrim, FIFA, all fighting games, all racing games, etc. These all use fun gameplay over points/achievements/kd-ratio as the main motivations to play the game.

In Wii sports, you compete for the points. Mario kart you compete for the scoreboard, if there would not be a scoreboard, online games would not be popular at all. Don't know smash bros or mario games at all, so no comment on that.

You really think that people don't play online games to beat eachother? That shows on the scoreboard! GTA and Skyrim, they have stories which give motivation to play the game.

Sports and racing games go with the scoreboard/achievements category.

You might be happy playing a funny game for nothing ie. saving the princess from a turtle over and over, but you are just one of the few. I certainly could not see myself driving around on mario kart without timekeeping or leaderboard.
