The only true thing Nintendo has over Sony in the handheld market is it's pedigree. Nothing more. The fact that they have kept the same franchises around for so long has allowed them to become house hold names. Are they some how better than what Sony offers? Hell no, and I could argue that they kinda suck, but repetition is how you make a name for yourself.

Sony, in the beginning focused very heavily on 3rd Party in PS1 era. They had quite a few games that represented Playstation and will forever be ubiquitous with the name. Resident evil, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Crash, etc are linked to PS due to repetitiously being available(some exclusively) on the console for so long. Go check out the sales differentiation on the multiplatform entries for reference if you do not believe me.

Unfortunately many of these have gone the way of the Dodo or gone Multiplatform. Sony has in the past few years, formulated a plethora of strong 1st party titles to fill these voids. Yet you cannot expect something that has only been around for one generation to have the kind of assured selling power Mario has. It is just highly unlikely.

This is where Vita comes in. No matter what they release for it, it is probably not going to have the selling power of a Mario game unless it is something that has been out just as long.....FF for instance. Does this mean that what is available on it is weak? Far from it, and anyone who has a Vita will tell you that it's growing line up is far better than any other system's in the past within the same time frame.

With every new console each one of these titles will become immediately recognizable to those who bought it and keep growing, as long as they stick to them. Sony has learned their lesson to stop killing off every good franchise they have in light of something new or leaving it up to 3rd party to grow the system, consumers are too lazy and most often look for recognizable names. If they leave this to 3rd party they can just screw them over(NIN learned this with FF and so did Sony this gen) , so they need to make sure the 1st party is there.

Over all, First Party is far more important than 3rd, Vita has great 1st party coming, be happy.

I approve of this post. Gran Turismo has been around for a long time and I'm sure that Sony would have liked to keep Crash and Spyro, but that didn't happen. And instead of forcing their developers to stay on one franchise and keep pumping out installment after installment, the studios get to make what they want to make.

Even Polyphony Digital has made games outside of Gran Turismo.
