US Senate candidate: Pregnancy from rape can be ‘something that God intended to happen’

How do candidates like Mourdock and Akin even get into a position to make these comments? How did they become viable political candidates in the first place? Most Democrats and Republicans are good, well-meaning people. It's hard for me to believe that there are enough people out there willing (or eager) to vote for someone who believes in these words.
