Yep it's a rip off, not a clone. It's a great game, but it was heavily inspired in smash. Some people argue that just because the method of scoring points it's different its a "completely different game", but it's not. Almost everything else is a carbon copy of smash, with little differences (like having stages being a mash up of 2 franchises instead of of just one for example; or having Sony characters instead of Nintendo ones)
Even the copycat company Gameloft who makes clones of famous franchises inject some "unique" ideas to their games, like their ones characters or stories.
