Really interesting topic. I will say that it's too risky for Sony to release online games on other platforms, (including the competition) it will totally change their image even if they do planned to make a new console in a few more years. So even though Sony could cut cost I don't think it will work for them in the long run, if they indeed do that might as well only make software like Sega.
