OnLive has an awkward server configuration, not suited for Sony's needs. It runs 1:1,, 1cpu/gpu for everybody. It had lots of debt, plus it was in a weaker position. Sony wouldn't get any OnLive patents as they are the property of its ex CEO.
Gaikai is better. Better server configurations just for Sony's need, wich wants the service on multiple devices. Gaikai has lots of connections within the industry and Nvidia.
OnLive was worth almost $2bn, Sony did a great deal by buying their competitors for 1/5th of that. It will become a goldmine for Sony.
