You can always buy the hero with ingame points. No need to invest real money   you only need to pay real money for alternate costumes as far as I know.

Looks like I'd need to play ~100 games (hours) as heroes I'm not happy with, and could still have that time investment taken off me for no reason. I have no problem paying money, as long as I get what I bought indefinitely.
