For the most part, cows and chickens were bred to be dumb, tasty and "anti-social" and are generally treated very well before they are slaughtered ...
Animals like dogs, cats and horses were bred to be working animals and tend to be smarter and more social; and the working relationship between humans and these animals has created an emotional bond that makes it difficult to imagine eating them.
In my opinion (just about) the only animal that we eat that seems a little odd is pigs because they're an animals that is very smart and social.
