No. It's the analysts who think the Fire and the Nexus 7 are existential threats to Apple.
Maybe the iPad mini will change things (it is 30-40% larger than other 7-inch tablets), but as near as I can tell, the market for mid-size tablets is maybe 1/4 the size of the market for large tablets. And that's with an average selling price less than half that of 10" tablets.
These are not signs of a product which consumers are clamoring for. Apple's making an iPad mini to shut the door on competitors and to better serve the education market (smaller fingers and tighter budgets).
