And this shows one thing about people who end up disliking and opposing something.  They will usually have a cartoon characterization of the thing they dislike and oppose and mock, that doesn't do it justice.  It takes a degree of respect to get the understanding right, and that will usually limit the mocking and disliking.

While it is pretty much in the past Pagans and Christians do have a long history of not liking each other.  Both sides killed each other, forced converted, etc since the beginning of Christianity.  You can't expect people to act rationally when it comes to religion.  Usually the argument boils down to your religion is wrong and you are going to hell for it.  How can you expect to act civil to a group of people that has condemned you to hell?
