I am no hardcore ape escape fan but even I knew who Spike was. He was one of the most requested characters when the game announced as well as I recall. I know many who were very happy with his inclusion. If you know anything about ape escape, which is a pretty iconic franchise for PS...you should know him. And since you seem to like wiki pages..here you go
http://apeescape.wikia.com/wiki/Spike

as for Radec...yeah he is very well known. If you even remotely know the KZ franchise you should know who Radec is. He is the best possible choice superbot could have gone with in Killzone. He is also VERY popular in the beta. Fantastic character to play as

Really...if they included someone like Rau from Mark of Kri and you guys said it was an odd choice I would have agreed...but Radec and Spike? LOL

The Ape escape games have sold just over 3.6million units.... over the course of 8 games over 11 years, the last retail game to come out was in 2005 on the ps2 and it sold 130k units that is on a system with 150million people as an install base at the time meaning less than 1 in every 1000 ps2 owner bothered with the last ape escape game, while you yourself might like the series to "LOL" at people not knowing it is just silly we're part of the 999 of the 1000 people which had you as the person who still liked Ape Escape 7 years ago, See what I'm getting at?

As for Radec 4 games over 8 years and they've sold 7million that is pretty damn good to be honest but still it's not like anyone who hasn't played those game is going to know he is a character from that game, not like say Kirby.... you see him, you might not have played his games but you've a fair idea he is from the Kirby Series. Heh also just noticed how much Killzone has sold in Japan the area vita needs to get a good proper boost of units out there and yeah I doubt anyone there will have the slightest idea who this guy is.

Those 3 lines sum up the whole problem imo.

I have heard of Ape Escape, I have played one of them on the PSP god knows maybe 5 years ago or so. But I have no idea who "Spike" is, what he looks like or that he was in an Ape Escape game.

I don't really know any of the characters. Because the characters in this roster, you will only have heard of if you have played the games they are in and played them for more than a few hours to actually remember them, and let's face it - they aren't really that memorable.

Maybe that's just the problem with a lot of PS3 games where people just don't know about the characters apart from 4-5.

My other problem with those 4-5 is that I know of them mostly because of annoying fanboys on the internet. Like some silly sods who have Nathan Drake as an avatar and keep going on about how "kick ass" Kratos is and so forth.

Yes I own a PSP, PS2 and a PS3 - Yes I play a games on those consoles. People can hardly say the likes of Sly Cooper are popular characters. I know who he is as "some character that looks like a fox". I don't know anyone else who knows who he is. Unless you're really into Sony as a company and a heavy supporter of the PS3 I doubt many people will have heard of more than half of that character list.

That isn't really a good thing and maybe a game of this nature isn't a good idea if they don't have the recognition to back it up.

SSBB - The only games I play on recent Nintendo platforms avidly aren't from first party - yet I recognize each and every one of the characters in Brawl, because they ooze appeal. These characters aren't the notable part of the games they were in, they are just characters that were in the games they were in. I'm quite sure many people would recognise every enemy that is in Super Mario World and they could make a better roster from that single game than what is in this.

Just done a count, there are 7 characters there who not only do I not recognize the name, I don't even recognize them from how they look or have a clue what game they were in.
