Because of the high cost of developing games, the average game is much better than mediocre, and probably all the way up to decent around 7/10. There are worse games out there, but nobody reviews them and nobody plays them. The review score is not a replacement for reading a review, it's just an at-a-glance way of reconciling positive and negative statements to get a very quick first impression of whether or not you should buy the game, and it makes average calculation possible. |
5/10 is most like above average. If every game that came out was reviewed the average score would probably sit at a 4/10. There is a lot of trash out there that reveiw sites dont touch. They tend to only review games that they think thier readers might have some interest in.
On a different note. Even though a game is broken, the review might still have a great time with the game and give it a good score. In my case I would give Condemned 2 a 9/10, but warn people that there is a game breaking bug that might erase your save file. This happened to me just as I got to the final level of the game. I never started over, because I was so upset. But I still really like the game.
