If you played the game to get the Legacy status, you would only pay $7.99 a month with 8 characters per server with 40 total, for free. This game costs a lot less than WoW's monthly fee, and I think SE has the best deal on this game. Considering I had just canceled my FFXI account (keeping my characters in limbo; I have none of my friends on that game so I can't do a thing with my characters) which was $12.95 a month (+$1 for my second character), I didn't want the monthly fee eating at my bank account. Plus SE took away the bonuses for having both FFXI and FFXIV active (transferring character name from FFXI to FFXIV, in-game item bonuses for having both games linked), so there is no need to play or keep my FFXI account active anymore.
And F2P games are cheap and a waste. I don't mind it and I think it's better for the monthly fee, as you get better service if you don't pay for one.
