Going by total sales of all 3 systems, I'd say they're succeeding,

Total sales only tells so much.  When you sale your console at a loss you lose money and then rely on software.  Sony lost billions on the PS3.  Xbox lost a lot as well on the RROD, they have more income though due to XBL but all in all systems sold is pointless beyond a console war

Not talking about profit. Talking about relevance. If they're fightint to stay relevent, I'd say they're doing a decent job at it.

Sonys sales in third should be considered graceful. They are selling more in third than the Xbox and Gamecube sold combined last gen against the PS2.

As I stated before systems sold means nothing.  Gamecube made a profit.  I don't know if XBOX did or not but I do know that Microsoft didn't lose money in the years of the original XBOX

Don't quote me on this but I think the original Xbox sold at like $100 loss for pretty much the entire gen.  Microsoft as a whole did well but the Xbox was losing money all along.  The thing is, this was their strategy.  I still have the issue of EGM where they interviewed the creators and they said that they weren't just thinking about that gen.  They were thinking 10 or 20 years down the road about getting the Xbox into position.  I'm really tempted to dig that issue out--it had a green cover.
