One thing to remember about voting for a 3rd party candidate that I forgot:

A higher percentage of votes for 3rd parties usually means that certain benefits are granted to them. For example, in some states, if they garner above 5% of the votes, they may be eligible for federal funds, do not need to constantly request ballot access, and in can participate in debates with Republicans and Democrats (that one is the biggest!).

If Johnson would of had 15% of the national vote, he would be included in a 3-way debate with Obama and Romney. At 15%, he wouldn't win, but being able to debate on the national stage would be bigger and more important than just about anything.
