That's because the ending as it was originally was garbage. 3 choices with identical endings except for what color things were. 3 shitty choices that Shephard would have said "screw you" to all of them (or not. My Shephard would have). The ending was bad, plain and simple, and only EA apologists believe otherwise. Where's the "you win the game and spend the rest of your life chilling on a beach" ending? (Also known as "the good ending"). Your character has kids with (romantic interest), and build a life together, picking up the pieces from the war. What about all your companions? What about Tali, who literally can't EAT anything on earth without getting sick and dying? Great ending there, writers. And that's just the beginning of the problems with what was originally written. Brilliant.
Seriously, as awesome as ME1, 2, and even 3 were, the end was a complete mess that should never have made it past internal testing. No one is going to feel satisfied with what they did. Number 1 rule in writing: don't kill your main character. Even more so in games where the player puts themselves in the role of the main character.
Seriously, in a game with multiple endings, it literally is possible to make almost everybody happy. I point to Chrono Trigger as example of how multiple endings can be done. Its stands in stark contrast to the utter fail that EA and Bioware put together for the ME3 ending. Shame on them. They deserve all the ridicule they get and more.
