I certainly hope it's not the case. Sony has made some bone-headed decisions in the past 6 years, but so have Microsoft and Nintendo.

I have a lot of respect for Sony, for going it alone with the PS1 and for turning out arguably the greatest console ever with PS2.

However, I think that maybe what made the PS1 and PS2 so popular might one day doom Sony to obscurity: high-profile third-party exclusive games. Third-party exclusive games are becoming more rare, and video game companies more mercenary.

It's common wisdom to say Nintendo lost the fifth and sixth generation because it focused too much on its own IPs at the expense of third-party games, but maybe by losing those battles it won the larger war.

As more and more games become available on all systems, exclusive content will become increasingly relevant. But not just highly-rated exclusive content (PS3 is kicking some serious ass in that category) but high-grossing exclusive content.

Maybe Sony just needs a Mario.
