Here, phenom, just for fun :

When Nintendo wins, it's close, and its thanks to the casual audience. Most core regret their purchase and will be reluctant to make it again unless WiiU is compelling. That's a good portion of that 97M.

When Sony wins, it's a no-contest, and its thanks to catering to all audiences and thanks to aggressive marketing. People were ready to give them money again (even at exorbitant rates), and are ready to do it again.
So, when Nintendo gets less fortunate, things will go down. For Sony, it can really only go up.

Hey man, I would tweak one thing you wrote above.

Nintendo won the numbers game this generation because it appealed to the largest amount of people.

Sony won the previous two generations because it appealed to the largest amount of people.

I don't think it's fair to say the Wii won because of casual players, and the PS2 won because of "all audiences." The casual market (and again I really don't like that terminology) is the biggest market. They are the people who buy the majority of video game consoles. So if PS2 won it's because a lot of people who are casually interested in video games bought it. It's the same reason the Wii won.

People like you and me are the minority in this equation. For every devoted video game fan on this site, there are 20 people who are only marginally interested in video games. They maybe buy a single system per generation and play only a handful of games. Those are the people who made the PS2 a huge success, and they are the same people who made the Wii a success.

I kind of disagree. There are people who are marginal gamers like you put it that bought a PS2, but they didn't buy a Wii, because it had nothing that compelled them. That's what OP tries to address. The discrepancy of nearly 50M units between the PS2 and the Wii, as well as the ability for the PS3 and 360 to sell much better than the previous runner ups (GC and XB) by almost 80M is also testament to that.

So I understand the casual term is imperfect, but it goes to show that alot of the people who wanted compelling and evoking content did not buy a Wii and either skipped the generation or bought a PS360. How to name these gamers, I tried to describe them in OP, but haven't found a name. It's not hardcore, because you don't have to be hardcore to like those games. It's not mature because those games don't need to be mature. The games just need to be deep and evoking, like Super Metroid was, like SotC was, like the games that cater to that segment should be, and that is where Nintendo should work on, that is their area of weakness. To fix that will improve their overall game, which is already very good, and it will give them more of an edge over that specific segment.

What name would you suggest? The segment that would prefer Super Metroid over Mario Party?

Well, I guess I would describe them as having good taste :)

But in all seriousness, if I had to describe the games you're looking for, I would say they are lyrical, immersive, powerful, timeless.

Yet I think I'm the wrong person to ask. Because I believe Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Skyward Sword fit that description.
