Yes that is the one thing that truly sucks with Android. However post-ICS that all changes. If you get a phone with at least 4.0 (all new phones now) you'll get later updates within a month or two vs a year. Example, the Galaxy S3 is getting 4.1 within the next couple of weeks. Only a little over a month after the code was released to the wild and/or after Nexus phones got it.
Additionally, you could skip all that mess by just getting a Nexus phone which is really the only Android that is the most similar to iPhone. (i.e. made and controlled by Google)
