I don't know, to me both factions have too many blurry lines to be read as "good" or "bad". They both have their good and bad elements, and even the mages, with all the oppression they've suffered, they have also inflicted equal harm on the general populace, given how easily and quickly a mage can become a powerful entity of destruction.

It doesn't help much that Every. Single. Mage. in DA2 ends up being either evil or taken over by a demon when they're pressed into a corner.

Makes it hard for them to hold the moral high ground.

That, and if you take into account that the Mages Circles are divided themselves into four factions, with the Libertarian faction being on the rise (the one that wants total freedom from the Chantry and the Templars, by any means necessary), doesn't paint that good of a picture.

If anything, both the Templars and the Mages are in a dangerous shade of grey when it comes to definitions, especially after the last events of DAII (Anders really blew it, so to speak ).
