I haven't actually played a Hitman game before. This looks like it might be my first.

Worth playing the old games first?

They aren't really story connected. Their still great games though. My favorite series from the PS2 gen.

If you think you may be turned off by outdated graphics/physics etc. Then just get Blood Money and skip out on the others. Because playing Silent Assassin can really feel uncomfortable if you have a hard time playing older games.

It's more of a strategy game than anything though.

I still play Age of Empires, the original Deus Ex, Starcraft and some of the older RPGs like Planescape Torment or FFVII from time to time. Oldr games are not a problem for me

Out of all of them, which one would you say is best?

I and most Hitman fans agree with Blood Money > Silent Assassin > Contracts. I haven't played the first since it was only on the PC. Be forewarned though that the AI in Silent Assassin can be ridiculous. Still a Hell of fun though. I'll be making a thread soon that details exactly what the games are like.
