I had never heard of this phenomenon until just a few days ago, but it looks like it's been going on for a while, and I wondered what you guys thought of it!

80% of Yemeni people chew this drug called qat (or Khat) (90% of adult men), and 40% chew for 4 or more hours per day. Chewing the plant releases something similar to pure adreniline, and definitely appears to be additive

Yemen families spend between 10-20% of their income on this plant alone, and is thought to be responsible for frail bones in children. As well as this, children who are crewing qat aren't being educated - and apparently is literally creating a generation of illiterate children because they chet qat most of the day.

50% of Yemen's (very limited) water resources are being spent on irrigating qat farms.
