How different is 3G from Tri though?

The G versions are the same game but add new monsters, items, armor, maps, etc. I believe.  It's like an extended ultimate edition.

In this case the difference is actually fairly large.  Tri was missing quite a few monsters and weapons classes that were present in previous games.  Although I got into the series with Tri, I can see why a lot of earlier fans griped about Tri missing a lot of content.

In addition to the G-rank difficulty level, new boss monsters, and G-rank equipment which is normal for G versions, 3G also adds back the hunting horn, bow, dual swords, gunlance weapons that Tri cut out, as well as the return of some classic monsters like Plesioth.  This should add a significant amount of new depth to the gameplay compared to Tri.

One regression is I believe the bowgun mechanics have been simplified from Tri and it is now more similar to previous games.  In Tri, you could separately choose three components of the bowgun rather than buying it as a single unit.
