No, he should have a second gun for backup, preferably a shotgun. So, he could shoot his kid.
And in case both guns were out of reach, he should also carry a military knife on him at all times for situation like this.
In unlikely event where the knife failed too. He should have gotten a bomb implanted inside him and goes off if his heart stopped for a few seconds. That'll prevent his kid from killing off the rest.
