not counting the contract cost is kinda silly.

Are you not going to have a phone? Contract cost is meaningless.

yes we all have a phone, what does this have to do with the difference between contract costs for an iphone and for the same contract with another phone or even the purchase of a cheap phone without contract and other payment method which would make it hundreds of dollars cheaper per year?

no clue how it is in usa but here in germany and i would say in most other countries, if i choose a phone for my contract which would cost "only" 200€ without contract instead of 600€ for the iphone, i can get both for the same price with contract but have to pay less monthly rates and after 2 years i have paid 400€ or so less which means yes, you have to count contract costs, at least those you have to pay more to get the iphone for $199 instead of another phone.

or do you have to pay the same monthly rate in usa for a phone which would cost only $50 without contract? here in germany monthly rates for that phone would be way lower than the monthly costs for the iphone contract. so i have to count at least the difference between the contract for the cheap phone and the iphone and after 2 years i would easily pay 500€ more.

In US cell rates do not change with phone or price of phone.

Just if you are or are not on a contract. If you leave the contract you pay $350 penalty. So almost all new phones cost $199 and older ones are $149 or less etc.
