I'm not saying we should kill them, I'm only bringing up the point that they're costing us tons of money to keep them alive for short periods of time. When an elderly person does not have the money to pay for surgery and other medical expenses, we pay for it. Do we want to spend 10k, 20, 40k just to keep this elderly person alive for a few months longer? Death is a natural process and I believe that it's something we're trying far too hard to run away from.
You could argue that it's morally the right thing to do (depending on your morals), but can we simply keep throwing all of that money away in effort to prolong elderly people's lives by a few months? The truth is that as much as we want to, we don't have all the money in the world and we will go further into debt and we can't sustain it. If you believe that bringing up these valid points makes me an asshole, then I'm perfectly fine with it. I realize it might be a somewhat rude awakening you're trying to hide from, but I would argue that our current state of medical spending isn't going to work for much longer. |
The very point of medecine is to make people live healthier, longer.
