If you want to have "We the people" and have it so that there is a representative democracy, as opposed to elect the oligarchys, you are going to have a government that reflects the collective will of the people. You throw in that rights to prevent individuals from getting crushed. In this, there is a symbiotic relationship, with the government belonging to the people, and in exchange, people expected to follow what the government says. Of course, one is free to believe this doesn't exist, consider the concept of social contracts absurd, and do their own thing. One can also believe in unregulated markets where consequences govern everything, and not preventive rules of law with law enforcement. One is free to think they live in a world where they built everything on their own, and got no help, and owe nothing back. One can also try to persuade most people to go with this. However, the reality is this: Most people don't consider that real, and do believe there are things called "nation" where people rise and fall together. I am sure elites, divas, and people with unbridled egos think this isn't so, but it is.
