Seems like everyday I see post saying the PS2 was for everyone and how all Ninty did was take the casual market from Sony. I have a question though, what proof do we have of how well the PS2 did with the casuals? I honestly dont it, the PS2's casual games did horrible (compared to the Wii's atleast) and hardcore games sold 10 times as much. Wii games have sold as much as CoD on both 360 and PS3 combined. What proof do we have of part of the PS2's base being casual when majority of its casual games did horrible?

Honestly I think people are confusing the PS2's incredible sells with casual appeal. What the PS2 really looks like is a combination of the 360 and PS3 with alittle Wii thrown in. Its other factors are being successful in Japan, and being released in many more countries than the other platforms. The PS2 surely wasnt for everyone(maybe all types of core gamers) and surely didnt reach the userbase the Wii did.

I disagree. PS2 was "for everyone" it's just that only a small segment of "everyone" got into PS2.

Singstar, Eyetoy and the Buzz series of games were very explicitly targetted at casuals and kids. So PS2 addressed the full spectrum of the gaming market, ergo it was "for everyone".

Wii was more successful at attracting the "casual" and fitness market, but that doesn't mean PS2 didn't cater to that market. What you are confusing is what Sony put on offer with whether very many people took what Sony offered.

There can be no debate that Sony put in a concerted effort go after that expanded market. But they only met with mild success, and they promptly lost it by having the way more expensive offering to a market that doesn't care about gfx or blu-ray in addition to not having anything to offer the fitness segment out of the gate. The had Singstar and Buzz early on so they did keep the casuals in the picture from the beginning of PS3.

We've had hours of play time with Singstar and Buzz with friends who are total non-gamers both on PS2 and PS3. But none of them has seen fit to buy PS2 or PS3 for themselves (or Wii for that matter) as they are happy to just play when they come here.

Thank you for this post. This is where i was getting at, people say the Wii was targeted at casuals and couldnt grab everyone since they couldnt grab the core. Well actually the Wii did try to grab the core it was just met with mild success in the hardcore market. So since the PS2 can be considered for everyone since it attempted to grab the casuals, the Wii can as well since it attempted the core. Thanks.
