If the reason was maintenance it would have "maintenance" in the message.
So it's something else. I doubt it's hackers, that would just be playing into Sony fans' hands far too much. But it's possible. More likely someone accidentally pulled out a plug and now they're having to do a full system re-set.
Just pray it's long enough that MS feel compelled to offer some free games, or at least a free month of Gold to every XBL user as an apology.
