Yes, it is definitely worth it. I own three 3ds systems myself. Two special edition custom 3DS systems (a Gundam one and a Dragonquest one) and a white 3DS LL/XL. The 3DS XL is my main my system. The large screen size is really great.
Also if you have a DSi XL, the dimensions are pretty similar, so you can share some accessories like the case. I was using my hori DSi XL soft case with my 3DS XL until I bought a new one.
