What went wrong with Age Of Empires?

I feel like I'm one of the few people who actually loved AoM... AoE II is my favourite, but I really enjoyed AoM. That said, I didn't care for AoE III at all. As others have said, the biggest problem was the setting. It just wasn't interesting. It never really grabbed me like the second game did.
