This is the key that few are talking about. Apple is taking advantage of a law & patent system that rewards the most aggressive and litigous companies. While I don't like what they're doing at all, I don't necessarily blame them for it, either. They're acting just how a business is supposed to act; in a manner that is self-serving and makes the most money possible.
The real culprit here is a broken patent system that rewards patents for trivial items that are based on common sense approaches to problems instead of real innovation. Apple is one of the most innovative companies on the planet but things like Pinch To Zoom and Slide to Unlock are nonsense patents that should be freely available to everyone as the logical solution to a rather simple problem.
