Uh it's been 'cool' since like forever. 

In ancient Celtic tribes/communities men with prized physical attributes were basically "studs" (literally) in that other families would bring their daughters to get impregenated by him. 

Genghis Khan conquered more than half of the world, and when he took over a new area, he did not seek out wealth or food, but the best looking women to mate with. It's been shown that something like 1/4 of all people from Asian descent have a common ancestor, this likely was Genghis Khan, as he literally spread his seed from one continent to another, lol.  

That was more for political reasons. Better-looking women tended to be highly placed (since back then pretty much only leaders were wealthy, and only the wealthy were healthy), and Genghis' system involved trying to politically integrate the conquered peoples into his family to then build loyalty, which involved taking lots of wives for himself and for his sons.
