Actually, it's not that far removed. The same basic concepts still apply. I own a racing wheel for Gran Turismo 5 and while real life driving is definitely different, just being able to practice steering on a racing wheel is a good way to build up experience for the real thing.
Again, you can't ever learn how to drive in a video game (at least, not yet), but getting your coordination down with a racing wheel will definitely help.
I don't know why people tell me to get a life. I'm a gamer, I have lots of lives!
