I'm rather torn about unlocking.  on one hand, I do agree it gives you somethign solid to work towards and really helps make a game last longer...but on the flipside there's nothing worse than playing the game on a new console or something only to have to repeat your actions ad nauseum.  it's not so bad when unlocking is a series of simple, easy to accomplish tasks, but when you gotta play through and do dozens of stupid things every time just to get stuff, it's annoying and repetitive.

It's like taking Guitar Hero to a buddy's place, only to realize too late that if you want to get to all the fun songs, you gotta play through the whole friggin setlist which is filled with Beastie Boys nonsense.

I think a good balance would be a game of 24 characters, where the 4 bosses are all unlockable by beating the game under different circumstances.  the main roster is there, but you shouldn't have to unlock 50% of the fighters or more, that's just silly.  I would hate to have to unlock, say, Solid Snake or Nathan Drake or Cole McGrath.

Oh! Now I see your point! :) Yeah, I agree with you. Unlocking is fun when it happens naturally playing through the game. That's what I meant. And that's the way I like it. :)
