Lol @ anyone who thinks this time is to add characters. Adding a character to a game is far more involved than people seem to think. Most likely the extra time will be used to fix any bugs and tweak character balance a bit.
Don't think the delay will be good for sales. While they might not be direct competitors, Black Ops 2, Assassin's Creed III, and so on are sort of hype black holes that will suck up interest for other games. Depending on how big the hype for the Wii U is, that could hurt things too. People only have so much money to spend on the holidays.
All that being said, it's good that they chose to delay it, rather than rushing a game with issues to launch.
