The sales are acceptable in the sense that Sony has no choice but to accept them.

I think that when the Vita starts to fulfill the promises it made before launch, it will be okay. When we get
-Vita vs. PS3 play in games that matter
-Good PS3 games that let you carry on your saves in their Vita version
-PS3 titles that give you a free copy of the Vita version
-PS1 compatibility
-Wii U styled gameplay in select PS3 titles

Then, people will actually pony up the money for the device. Right now, as much as I love my Vita, it's really just a PSP with better graphics. It has so many other features and abilities that just aren't being used yet (if ever). Great hardware that's just going to waste, in my opinion.

The Vita is a great tool to use against the Wii U, but it also needs to establish itself as a handheld with proper handheld games, rather than just being the PS3's "mini me".

I'm not sure if we're agreeing or disagreeing.  If we're agreeing then, high five

If we are disagreeing then I still agree with you.  It does need its own compelling software that shows that the Vita is different from the Wii U and the PS3.  At the same time, the Vita has a lot of features that, if used properly, can make it an excellent companion to the PS3.  The two devices can work together like Voltron.  Make it so that "If you want to unlock the true potential of the PS3, you'll need a PSV" to a degree.  The PS3 has a huge audience.  Sony can use that asset to sell the Vita.
