No, I am not saying they are lying, I'm just saying it's all diplomatic public relations talk. "very tight deadline" means exactly what I am saying. Having their developers focus for a long time on the PC costs them money, it's an investment in a market where very few titles per year make strong sales. The reason they are able to experiment is because they already made a profit from the consoles. |
That doesn't explain why Namco didn't go whole hog and get someone who knows what they're doing to make the PC port instead of saddling From with it. This is an essential failing on the feature set of this game that will result in a much lower return on their investment than they would have gotten with even the most barebone standard features we expect of console-to-pc ports.
And yes, console-to-pc ports have proven worth it this generation. Mass Effect (the whole series) was rooted in consoles, GTAIV was rooted in consoles - Hell I'm pretty sure Deus Ex: Human Revolution was developed on consoles.
Doing this apparently isn't that hard if you have any idea what you're doing. Namco, knowing that From had no idea what it was doing, saw fit to send out a forty-dollar version of Dark Souls to languish and die in the PC space when they could have actually made a fairly nice chunk of money off of it.
Even ignoring the business aspect of it
If you're not going to do it right, don't do it at all. A port this slipshod is an insult to potential customers.
