there is a difference between operatring income and net income ... so probably sony did NOT make a profit ... stupid thread !!!

This. But since this is a Sony dominated forum your comment will probably be conveniently overlooked :)

Sony Corp. 2011 fiscal year ending March 31, 2012     Operating Income  -$860 million    Net Income  -$5.8 billion       See the (massive) difference?

So I believe this thread:

and the $1.2 billion loss is more like it.

Cherry-picking at it's finest.

I believe we have been through what this thread is about, its not about Sony corp as a whole but Sonys game division. Hard to read? Sonys game division made 1/3 of Nintendos losses last Q.  Come back when you find the net income numbers for the different divisions, until then you have to do with operating income numbers, capiche?

Well net income is usually less than operating... but your point stands as operating income is what we are easily able to compare between companies. That and the example given by mitlar is not a great one in comparing operating and net income differences because Sony made some kind of big tax write off that year (can't remember the details, but it won't have been included in operating income, but is in net income)

Looking at Nintendo's history net income seems to waver between 40% and 90% of operating income most of the time, though that's for profit years... not sure if there might be a different trend for loss years (well actually there obviously will be a different trend mathematically, because 40% of a negative number is less loss) as Nintendo only have 1 of them, last year operating loss was 37 billion Yen while net loss was 43 billion Yen.
