The expansion added a heap to it, gave it some much needed strategic depth.
Still, my favourite Civ game is actually Alpha Centauri (well it's basically a Civ game).
Edit: I play Japan quite a bit, Bushido + Samurai = huge expansion through military for a period of the game. Bushido keeps its edge right till the end too.
