The halo is not a sun. The halo represents the glory of God manifesting out of a person. ...... The Catholic church was particularly noted for doing this, so art style and so on was borrowed, as were holidays. The Catholic Church, for convenience, took the Pagan holidays and redefined them, and kept the dates. Date of Jesus's birth being celebrated was put on December 25th, because that is what the culture did. You just change the meaning. You can see similar about Valentine's Day, where the date was kept, but the meaning was changed. |
I believe the halo to be thse sun for exactly the same reason you pointed out in the second bolded sentence.
Have a good look at Catholic comissioned paintings of old where the halo is obviously represented by the sun. Sun worshippers placing the sun on the head of their saints is no mere coincidence. In some ways it can be assumed that it is hidden form of sun worship. Not only did they keep the holidays, they kept the gods and renamed them.
The Jupiter statue become St. Peter etc.,
Regardless it comes down to what you choose to believe. You choose to believe the halo is not the sun and I choose to believe it is.
I am not being disrespectful towards your argument, you presented it well. I just don't agree with it.
