Then a single 690 should be more than enough for the next 5 years? Reason I ask, the 680 in SLI is about the equivalent (give or take) of one 690.

GTX 670x sli and 690 are pretty much identical in terms of performance.

GTX 670 sli is 200-300 cheaper though.
