There seems to be a lack of clarity on the 500k number although you can see where the estimate is coming from.

It's a Japanese blog that allegedly received this number from a leaked sales report from Famitsu.

Then again, NCSX reported that only 25% of production shipped (meaning 2 million initial press?). Referring to the percentage of their order that was received?

But Japanese retailer Lepton reports similar shortages on initial orders (based on 300-400k shipped)

Seems to be a bit of confusion as to what number actually shipped on day 1.
500k pending the alleged Famitsu sales report is legit.
