It's not a dead-end, it's just that I and probably a lot of other people are not in a hurry to buy a new tv again already after getting a 1080p set. I'm perfectly happy with my current 1080p tv and projector.
I played around with 3D on pc in '98 with Descent 2 and some other games. The initial wow factor is great but it wore off soon. The only upgrades since then are wireless glasses and double the flicker rate (which never bothered me anyway) So no hurry here.
Glasses aside, it will always be more comfortable to watch a 2D screen until they can figure out the problem of convergence and focal point not matching up.
